Mission of the Institut de la statistique du Québec with respect to sustainable development
The Sustainable Development Act amended the Act respecting the Institut de la statistique du Québec by entrusting it with a new role:
“Article 3.1. In the pursuit of its mission, the Institut shall collect, produce and disseminate the statistical information needed to develop and monitor the Government's sustainable development strategy, including the statistical information needed for sustainable development indicators, as well as the statistical information needed to prepare the reports provided for in the Sustainable Development Act (chapter D-8.1.1).”
The ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement et des Parcs (MDDEP) coordinated the elaboration of sustainable development indicators. The Institut has collaborated with the MDDEP and with the departments and agencies concerned, by providing expert advice in the statistical domain and on sustainable development indicators.
Statistics on the sustainable development indicators and the monitoring indicators in the government’s 2008-2013 Strategy on Sustainable Development are disseminated and updated by the Institut.
Sustainable Development Indicators
In order to make it easier to monitor and measure the efforts devoted to the government’s sustainable development approach, the indicators have been grouped into three levels that respectively meet specific needs:
Indicators that monitor and measure the progress achieved in Québec in sustainable development.
Indicators that contribute to measuring the level of achievement attained or the progress made with respect to the 29 objectives of the strategy.
- Level 3: Indicators used to monitor the sustainable development actions of Québec departments and agencies
Indicators contained in the action plans of each department and agency as regulated under the Sustainable Development Act that serve to monitor their actions on a yearly basis. Each department and agency is responsible for the selection and dissemination of its indicators. They are used to show how each action contributes to the attainment of the government’s objective.
