Québec Survey on Smoking, Alcohol, Drugs and Gambling in High School Students (ETADJES) 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2013

Type of survey: cross-sectional survey.

Target population: students in Secondary 1 to 5 enrolled in the youth sector in Québec French or English, public or private high schools in the fall of the year of the survey, excluding those enrolled in vocational training centres, schools located in administrative region 10 (Nord-du-Québec), schools where the language of instruction is an Aboriginal language, schools outside the school board network (under the authority of another department or the federal government) and schools comprising at least 30% of students with handicaps, social maladjustments or learning difficulties (SHSMLD).  


  • 2004: 4,726 students;
  • 2006: 4,571 students;
  • 2008: 4,736 students;
  • 2013: 4,943 students.

Themes: prevalence of smoking, frequency of smoking and quantity of tobacco smoked; social factors associated with smoking in youth; accessibility of tobacco; exposure to second-hand smoke in the environment; attempts to stop using tobacco products; use of e-cigarettes; prevalence of alcohol and drug use; combined use of psychoactive substances; factors associated with alcohol and drug use; prevalence of participation in gambling; factors associated with participation in gambling; level of recreational physical activity and active transportation; eating habits; physical appearance.
