This survey report presents a descriptive analysis
of results obtained within the scope of a survey conducted by the
Institut de la statistique du Québec at the request of the Ministère
de la Famille et de l'Enfance. Data was collected in two phases:
from December 1 to 19, 2000 and from January 5 to February 23, 2001.
The purpose of the survey was to update data obtained within the
framework of a 1998 survey that examined the needs of families in
the area of day care services as well as to review parental preferences
with regards to the different types of day care services available.
The target population for this survey was Québec
families with children under the age of 5 at September 30, 2000.
Among the 9,000 families who were selected to take
part in the survey, 6,783 answered the questionnaire either verbally
or by returning the completed form by mail. With the exception of
a few areas, the data collected within the framework of this survey
is considered reliable since there were no apparent factors that
could have influenced the results obtained from the population in
question. The descriptive analysis informs readers where this situation
is applicable.
The results are grouped into 8 regional amalgamations.
Two new components were added in addition to those found in the
1998 survey. These include educational day care services and employer
atypism as well as educational day care services in underprivileged
areas of the Montréal region.
