The results of the 6th edition of the Québec survey on tobacco, alcohol and drug use and gambling in Québec secondary school students – conducted in the fall of 2008 with 4,736 students from Secondary I to V throughout Québec – show that during the 30 days preceding the survey, 15% smoked cigarettes (especially girls). They also show that during the 12 months preceding the survey, 60% of the students used alcohol at least once, 28% used drugs (27% of them used cannabis), and 37% participated in games of chance and gambling. The prevalence of each of those behaviours is significantly less than observed in 2004. The index of problematic use of alcohol and drugs indicates that 6% of the students have an emerging drug or alcohol use problem and that 6% have one for which specialized intervention would be desirable. The index of gambling problems reveals that 4% of the students risk developing a gambling dependence and 2% are probable pathological gamblers.
