1. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is the ratio of weight (in kilograms) to the square of height (in meters). In this table, a BMI from 18.5 to less than 25.0 is "normal weight," a BMI from 25.0 to less than 30.0 is "overweight" and a BMI greater or equal to 30.0 is "obese." The category of "underweight" (defined as a BMI of less than 18.5) is not presented because of the large number of imprecise estimates at the regional level (coefficients of variation of 15% or more). The estimated populations, however, were calculated for the four BMI categories.
2. Health region.
3. The evolution of data over time should be interpreted with caution: in 2000-2001, 2003 and 2005, information on height and weight was obtained via a questionnaire administered by an interviewer, whereas in the three previous surveys, it was obtained from a self-administered questionnaire. These different modes of collect may have affected data comparability.
4. Given that the data are from surveys, the 95% confidence interval (C.I.) indicates the limits around a sample estimate in which the true population value is expected to fail, 19 out of 20 times. When confidence intervals overlap, the difference is not considered statistically significant.
* Coefficient of variation between 15% and 25%; the estimate should be interpreted with caution.
** Coefficient of variation greater than 25%; the estimate lacks precision. The data is provided for information only.
