University degree holders in Québec in 2006: a growing disparity among the sexes
Québec, September 17, 2009 – In Québec, in 2006, one person in five aged between 25 and 64 (20.8%) holds a university degree and more than one in two times (51.6%), it is a woman. It is young women who ensure that majority: among those aged 25-34, 31.9% of the women and 23.0% of the men hold a university degree, projecting a growing disparity in favour of women as the population advances in age. This finding was taken from the study Les titulaires d’un grade universitaire au Québec : ce qu’en disent les données du Recensement de 2006 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Different distribution of men and women
In certain administrative regions, women account for close to 6 university degree holders in 10. Among the 25-34 year olds, about 7 university degree holders in 10 are women in the Côte-Nord and Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine regions, while the proportion is around two-thirds in the regions of Lanaudière, Nord-du-Québec, Laurentides, Centre-du-Québec, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Abitibi-Témiscamingue. What is more, Montréal especially attracted young men between 1996 and 2006, that region’s share of the Québec male population of university degree holders aged 25 to 34 going up 5.1 percentage points.
Female and male job bastions persist
In Québec in 2006, the three industries that employ the most university degree holders are educational services, health care and social assistance and professional, scientific and technical services. Women account for 71.0% of the university degree holders aged 25 to 64 working in health care and social assistance, and for 65.2% of those who work in educational services, two industries that are present everywhere in Québec. As for men, they account for 63.5% of university degree holders aged 25-64 employed in professional, scientific and technical services, an industry concentrated in the Montréal region and surrounding regions.
One 25-to-64-year-old university degree holder in five is an immigrant
In 2006 immigrants accounted for 21.2% of the Québec population of 25‑64 year olds with a university degree. Immigrants are highly educated: 51.2% of those aged 25 to 64 who arrived between 2001 and 2006 hold a university degree. Those recent immigrants alone accounted for 38.8% of the increase in university degree holders in the Québec population between 2001 and 2006
