Québec, February 19, 2014 – The Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec releases today the first two volumes of the statistical study État des lieux du cinéma et de la télévision au Québec. This work stems from the desire to have a global representation of the audiovisual industry as well as understand the magnitude of its economic flows.
From consumption to creation
We learn that in 2011-2012, film and television consumption in Québec, both for domestic and foreign content, was supported by $2 billion spending by consumers, $685 million by advertisers and $363 million by governments for public television.
In the same year, the value of domestic production of audiovisual content was $1 billion, i.e. $640 million for Québec independent production and $426 million for internal and affiliated broadcaster production.
A robust and evolving system
An original way of looking at available statistics on income and expenditure in the film and television industries sheds light on features such as:
- the economic importance of audiovisual work access services (cable television, telecommunications, etc.)
- the predominance of the television sector and foreign films
- the structuring effect of public sector contributions
These findings, and many others, are from the analysis accompanying the statistics in Volume 1, Flux économiques et organisation industrielle. This volume highlights the structural links between different components of audiovisual channels in Québec, as well as changes associated with digital media.
Distribution of economic value stemming from its framework
The progression of economic value and the sharing of resources within the audiovisual industry depend on the internal dynamics and the complex relationships that govern the organizational structure of the system. For this reason, Volume 2, Encadrement législatif et organisation associative, describes the role of federal and Québec public administration regarding legislation and regulation and offers an overview of the many representation and promotion organizations (professional associations, copyright collective societies, unions, etc.) that are part of the Québec audiovisual landscape.
The État des lieux du cinéma et de la télévision is produced with the financial support of the Québec Film and Television Council, Telefilm Canada, the ministère de la Culture et des Communications, the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles and the Canada Media Fund.
This information can be found on the website of the Observatoire de la culture et des communications du Québec.
The Institut de la statistique du Québec produces, analyses and disseminates official, objective and quality statistical information on various aspects of Québec society. It is the statistical coordinator for Québec and the relevance of its work makes it a strategic ally for decision makers and all those wishing to learn more about Québec.
