The Institut mourns the death of Yvon Fortin, its first director general

Québec, June 5, 2014 – The Institut de la statistique du Québec mourns the death of Yvon Fortin, who passed away on May 27, 2014. Mr. Fortin, a University of Ottawa graduate in economics and statistics, served as Director General of the Institut de la statistique du Québec from 1998 to 2007.

Previously, he worked at Statistics Canada and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. He was also a consultant for the United Nations (UN), and served as Chairman of the Governing Board of the UNESCO Institute of Statistics from 2008 to 2011.

Under his leadership, the Institut de la statistique du Québec took its first steps, formed by the merger of four entities: the Bureau de la statistique du Québec, the Institut de recherche et d’information sur la rémunération, Santé Québec and a section of the Ministère du Travail assigned to the Total compensation survey.

He succeeded in putting in place the foundations which have made the Institut de la statistique du Québec a statistical organization recognized for the quality of its work beyond the borders of Québec.

The Institut wishes to extend its most sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Fortin.

The Institut de la statistique du Québec produces, analyses and disseminates official, objective and quality statistical information on various aspects of Québec society. It is the statistical coordinator for Québec and the relevance of its work makes it a strategic ally for decision makers and all those wishing to learn more about Québec.
