Among the horticultural industry sectors, vegetables (+$39.7 million), berries (+$36.5 million), apples (+$22.2 million) and potatoes (+$16.4 million) recorded the strongest growth from 2010 to 2013.

In comparison, in 2013, horticultural production in Canada generated receipts of $6,090.4 million. Ontario held the top position with 40.8% of Canadian receipts, followed by British Columbia (20.8%) and Québec (16.2%). This information comes from the Profil sectoriel de l’industrie horticole au Québec, édition 2014, a joint intitiative of the Institut de la statistique du Québec and the ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec.

Horticultural exports rise 10.4%

In 2013, exports ($473.9 million) and imports ($573.3 million) of horticultural products both increased compared with 2012, respectively by 10.4% and 9.1%. Over the 2010-2013 period, average annual growth stood at 16.4% for exports and 4.7% for imports. The trade balance dropped from -$168.3 million to -$63.4 million during this period. This reduction is attributable to a rise in exports of berries (+$116.1 million), field vegetables (+$57.9 million) and to a drop in imports of greenhouse vegetables
(-$4.3 million) and mushrooms (-3.4 million).
