Labour market continues to improve in most Québec RCMs

Québec, December 12, 2016 – In 2015, the number of workers aged 25 to 64 years increased in 81 out of 104 regional county municipalities (RCM). Compared to the previous year, the best performances were observed in the RCMs in the peripheral regions of Montréal and those with strong demographic growth. This was the case for Mirabel, which continued to stand out with a 4.4% increase in the number of workers in 2015, as well as for Montcalm (2.9%), La Rivière-du-Nord (2.5%), Rouville (2.5%) and Les Jardins-de-Napierville (3.3%). These are among the main findings drawn from Bulletin Flash. Évolution du marché du travail dans les MRC, which was published today on the Institut de la statistique du Québec website.

Number of workers down in several Côte-Nord RCMs

Of the six RCMs in the Côte-Nord region, four recorded a drop in the number of workers in 2015: Caniapiscau (–2.6%), Sept Rivières (–2.4%), Minganie (–1.9%) and Manicouagan (–1.2%). This was the fourth consecutive annual drop for Caniapiscau, and the rate of this decline is accelerating. Despite this decline, Caniapiscau posted the highest rate of workers for any RCM in Québec (85.9%).

Employment income up in Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Bas-Saint-Laurent

In 2015, the highest increases in median employment income were in the RCMs of Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Bas-Saint-Laurent. In the RCM of Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, this increase rose to 7.4%, the highest increase in any RCM. La Haute-Gaspésie, Le Rocher-Percé, Kamouraska and La Matanie were also among those RCMs with the strongest employment income growth.

Income disparity between men and women

Between 2002 and 2015, the gap between the employment income of men and women went from 30.3% to 21.3% in Québec. This drop was observed in every RCM except Caniapiscau. However, employment income inequality between men and women persisted, in particular in those RCMs whose economy was based on natural resource exploitation. In Caniapiscau, Abitibi-Ouest, Sept-Rivières, Jamésie and La Vallée-de-l’Or, the earnings of male workers exceeded those of their female counterparts by over 40% in 2015.

Strong proportion of women in the labour force in the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine RCMs

In every Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine RCM, more than half those working were women. The RCMs of Avignon, Bonaventure, Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Le Rocher-Percé were among those with the highest proportion of female workers in Québec.
