Growth in attendance at movie theatres in 2015

Québec, February 18, 2016 – Attendance at Québec movie theatres totalled 20 million admissions in 2015, up 7% from 2014. Box-office revenues ($161 million) increased by 7% and the number of screenings (953,000) by 3%. These results come from the Film Screening Survey conducted by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications du Québec (OCCQ) of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

Québec films: attendance and revenues up

Québec films attracted 1.56 million moviegoers, a 23% increase from 2014 (1.27 million). Québec films, which accounted for 5.9% of admissions in 2012, saw their share increase for the third consecutive year to 7.8% in 2015.

The animated film La guerre des tuques 3D, based on the original 1984 movie, topped the Québec film box-office with 347,000 admissions as of December 31, 2015, followed by the comedy Le mirage (326,000 admissions). Together, these two movies accounted for 43% of admissions to Québec films. The drama La passion d’Augustine ranked third with 225,000 admissions. Two more Québec films, Paul à Québec and Ego trip, surpassed the 100,000 admissions mark in 2015.

Attendance up at U.S. films, but down at French and Canadian (other than Québec) films

In 2015, U.S. films attracted 510,000 more moviegoers than in 2014, a 3% increase. For the first time in over ten years, the 10 most popular movies of the year were all U.S. films. Only French and Canadian (other than Québec) films had fewer admissions in 2015 than in 2014.
