Québec, June 20, 2017 – In 2016, 504 new films were shown in Québec movie theatres, including 69 Québec films. Movie theatres in the Montréal region showed 499 new films (65 Québec films), compared to 318 in the Capitale-Nationale region (51 Québec films). As has been the case for the past few years, a regional disparity is observed. For example, the closer the region is to Montréal, the lower the number of showings in that region. This is what the statistics published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec have revealed.
Relative success of the 3D format
Among the films offered both in 2D and 3D format, 3D showings accounted for 45% of the attendance, down continuously since 2011 (59%). For all films shown in movie theatres in 2016, the 3D share accounts for 17% of the showings (16% in 2015), 22% of the attendance (19% in 2015) and 28% of the revenue (25% in 2015).
Attendance down in all regions
In 2016, movie theatre attendance decreased by 7% in all administrative regions combined, fluctuating between a 4% decline in Chaudière-Appalaches and 14% in the Côte-Nord region. With 5.5 million admissions, Montréal is the only region to see its attendance fall uninterruptedly since 2009.
Share of showings in French by region
For the same year, 71% of showings were in French. This share is 95% for Québec films, 91% for French films and 70% for United States films. The share of showings in French is 37% in the Montréal region, 85% in the Capitale-Nationale region and 86% in the rest of Québec.
These figures are taken from the 2017 edition of Statistiques sur l’industrie du film et de la production télévisuelle indépendante, prepared by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications du Québec.
