Publication of the results of a survey of over 15,000 Québec businesses on digital technology

Québec, November 28, 2017. – In 2016, 90.2% of Québec businesses were connected to the Internet, up 6 percentage points from 2012. The connection rate increases with business size: it stands at 86.4% in businesses with 1 to 4 employees, compared to 100% in those with 250 or more employees. The connection rate also varies depending on the industry: in the information and cultural industry, 99.1% of businesses are connected, while that proportion only reaches 75.5% in the accommodation and food services sector. These data come from a newsletter on Québec business Internet access in 2016 released today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec and based on the results of the Survey of Internet Integration into Business Processes1.

Among businesses that are not connected to the Internet, nearly 8 out of 10 do not have any computer devices: they have no computers, smartphones, tablets or personal digital assistants. Most non-connected businesses have fewer than 10 employees and are in the accommodation and food services, retail trade, or construction sector.

Among businesses that are connected to the Internet, 93.2% have a high-speed connection. That proportion exceeds 90.0% in businesses of all sizes and in all industries, except for those in the agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting sector. Compared with other businesses, those that have a low-speed connection (6.8% of connected businesses) face more issues—such as service availability issues—when wanting to switch to a higher-speed connection.

1. The Survey of Internet Integration into Business Processes was conducted by the Institut de la statistique du Québec in the fall of 2016 and the winter of 2017 among 15,205 Québec businesses with one or more employees in 16 industries. Over the next few weeks, four newsletters on Internet use, e-commerce, information and communication technology (ICT) use, and ICT investments as well as the full results of the Survey of Internet Integration into Business Processes will be published on the website of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
