Les compétences en littératie, en numératie et en résolution de problèmes dans des environnements technologiques : des clefs pour relever les défis du XXIe siècle

The ability to understand and process printed or computerized information is essential in the 21st century for fully participating in society and adapting to change. Based on data from the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), this report presents the first detailed portrait of three core competencies of Québecers in processing information in 2012 – literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving in technology-rich environments. The data were collected by Statistics Canada from a national sample of people 16 to 65 years of age, of whom 5,911 were Québec respondents.

In addition to the analysis of these three competencies by sex and age, the report presents links between these and certain factors such as educational level, employment status, continuing education and training, immigrant status, language, and practices related to reading, writing, mathematics and computer use outside the workplace. It also describes differences in performance observed between Québec and the rest of Canada. These and the other results can contribute to gaining a better understanding of essential competencies, and can foster discussions and interventions on the part of stakeholders involved in the development of key skills in Québecers in terms of processing information.
