The patent indicators presented in this section count the patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Patents issued by the USPTO are particularly interesting because the importance of the U.S. market prompts inventors to file applications for a patent regardless of their nationality. When an invention is patented, the official patent document lists the names and addresses of the inventor(s) and those of the assignee(s). In other words, patents can be counted by place of residence of the inventors or by that of the assignees.
