    Québec’s real GDP at basic prices up 1.9% in January 2024

    Québec, April 23, 2024. – In January 2024, Québec’s real gross domestic product (GDP) at basic prices was up 1.9% from the previous month, after a 1.5% decrease in December 2023. This was revealed in Produit intérieur brut par industrie au Québec, janvier 2024 published today by the Institut de la statistique du Québec.

    Production of goods up 1.0%

    Output in the goods industries rose 1.0% in January, after a 0.6% drop in December. The increase in January was primarily driven by the manufacturing sector (+1.1%), including the fabricated metal product manufacturing (+7.5%) and machinery manufacturing (+5.4%) subsectors. The utilities sector grew 3.8%.

    Service production increased by 2.3%

    In January, output in the service industries was up 2.3% after a 1.7% decrease in December. This growth came mainly from educational services (+22.9%) and social assistance (+4.0%) as activities resumed in January after the public sector strikes in November and December 2023.

    Québec’s real GDP in January 2024 up 0.1% over January 2023

    In January 2024, Québec’s real GDP was 0.1% higher than in January 2023. The sectors that contributed the most to this increase are real estate and rental and leasing (+2.0%), public administration (+2.5%), and transportation and warehousing (+3.0%).

    Canada’s real GDP at basic prices up 0.6% in January 2024

    According to data published by Statistics Canada on March 28, 2024, Canada’s real GDP at basic prices by industry was up 0.6% in January after a 0.1% decline in December. Output in the goods and service industries grew by 0.2% and 0.7%, respectively.
