Monthly business openings and closures in Québec
Results on monthly business openings and closings in Québec provide information on the number of active businesses, the number of openings and closures of registered businesses each month, and the number of continuing businesses. This database is unique in that it breaks down business openings into reopening businesses and entrants, and closures into temporary closures and exits.
The data used come from Table 33-10-0270-01 – Experimental estimates for business openings and closures for Canada, provinces and territories, census metropolitan areas, seasonally adjusted (monthly) by Statistics Canada. The series begins in January 2015 and each monthly update overwrites the previous update. The results are broken down by industry and by census metropolitan area.
In March 2023, the number of active businesses (201,001) in Québec exceeded its pre-pandemic historical average (+5.4%). The number of business openings (6,823) was below the pre-pandemic historical average for March (-5.9%). However, it was lower than the number of business closures (7,211 or -5.7%), which exceeded its pre-pandemic historical average for March (+6.2%).
