Québec, May 31, 2018. – In 2016–2017, the value of film and TV production in Québec totalled $1.8 billion, a new record high that represents a 13% increase from the previous year. This was revealed in Profil de l’industrie audiovisuelle au Québec en 2017, published today by the Observatoire de la culture et des communications of the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Growth in foreign production and production services
Among the four production categories in the industry, foreign production and production services registered the strongest growth (40%), with a value of $557 million in 2016–2017— its highest level in the past 10 years.
Independent television production remained the largest component of Québec’s audiovisual industry. It rose slightly in 2016–2017 (0.6%) to $655 million, its second highest value since 2010–2011, when it stood at $739 million.
Between 2014–2015 and 2016–2017, three quarters of independent film and TV production was carried out in the Montréal region and surrounding areas. The other regions with a substantial production volume were Montérégie (13%), Capitale-Nationale (5%), and Laurentides (5%).
